Course Description:

A heath-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized

occupational theory, skills and concepts.  Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

 

Course Learning Outcomes:  

As outlined in the learning plan, apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.

 

Upon satisfactory completion of this course the student will:

 

  • Apply in the clinical or lab setting all procedures covered in previous courses: RSPT 1325, 1201, 1429, 1166, 1207,1160, 1213, 1431,1167,2210,2414,2353,2166,2325,1241,2139,2160 & 2243 . The student will be introduced to procedures taught/reviewed in concurrent course:  RSPT 2230.

 

  • Master the theory, concepts and skills involving tools, materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws and interactions within the political, economic environmental and legal systems associated with the workplace.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills as well as verbal and written communications in the workplace.
  • Under supervision, perform safely and effectively in the pediatric/neonatal health care environment as a respiratory care practitioner.
  • Under supervision, perform safely and effectively in the adult health care environments as a respiratory care practitioner.
  • Interpret hemodynamic data.
  • Develop a patient care plan
  • Perform general patient care competently with minimal supervision.
  • Participate in physicians’ rounds
  • Demonstrate effective speaking and listening skills during patient interviews
  • Demonstrate critical thinking as well as problem-solving in group discussion at conference.
  • Access computer generated x-rays for x-ray rounds
  • Provide direct patient care to a multicultural and diverse population.


SCANS: The Secretary's commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) has identified (1) reading, (2) writing, (3) mathematics, (4) speaking and listening, (5) thinking skills, (6) personal qualities, (7) workplace competencies, and (8) basic use of computers as competencies required to enter employment.



SCANS Performance Objectives:
1. The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of Scans competency 1 [reading] Performance will be satisfactory if the student successfully:

a. Understands assigned pages in the packet of log book entries
b. Understands the scenario format of the final exam questions
c. Understands the patients' charts

2. The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of Scans competency 2 [writing]. Performance will be satisfactory if the student successfully:

a. completes all the log book entries
b. completes all required patient charting

3. The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of Scans competency 3 [mathematics.] Performance will be satisfactory if the student successfully:

a. calculates the required formulae used in ventilation of the adult patient
b. calculates the required formulae used in ventilation of the neonatal patient
c. calculates the required formulae used in assessment of adult as well as the pediatric patient
d. calculates the required formulae used in the hemodynamic worksheets

e. calculates the required formulae used during weaning from mechanical ventilation

4. The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of Scans competency 4 [speaking and listening]. Performance will be satisfactory if the student successfully:

a. Works with hospital/ clinic/ lab staff to complete assignments
b. Participates in both the giving and the receiving of report at shift change

5. The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of Scans competency 5 [thinking skills]. Performance will be satisfactory if the student successfully:

a.     analyzes and answers the Logbook questions
b.     analyzes the questions required for charting patient care
c.     analyzes lab results, and other pertinent data in the patient's chart
d.     interprets electrocardiograms and makes recommendations regarding care
e.     interprets  pulmonary function studies and makes recommendations regarding care
f.      interprets chest films and makes recommendations regarding care
g.     interprets the arterial blood gases and makes recommendations regarding care

6. The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of Scans competency 6 [personal qualities]. Performance will be satisfactory if the student successfully:

a.     interacts with faculty and staff in the hospital social system
b.     monitors and suggests improvements to the patient care plan
c.     exhibits personal self-esteem by demonstrating leadership responsibilities in the hospital setting.
d.     acts as the patient advocate in the clinical setting
e.     displays the social skills needed to interact with the RCP staff
f.      displays the social skills needed to interact with the medical and the nursing staff
g.     displays the social skills needed to interact with the patient population

7. The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of Scans competency 7 [work place competencies]. Performance will be satisfactory if the student successfully:

a.    performs all the assessment skills needed to assess the adult and infant patient
b.    performs all the therapeutic skills needed to care for the adult and infant patient
c.    performs all the diagnostic skills need to care for the adult and infant patient

8. The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of Scans competency 8 [basic computer skills]. Performance will be satisfactory if the student successfully:

a.     interacts with the faculty via e-mail

b.     utilizes computer charting where applicable in the health care facility
c.     utilizes the Internet to access information on his/her patient's pathology or treatment options
d.     utilizes the computer to take the AMP test.


Exit Exam:

The student must pass all three AMP exams prior to getting a grade in this course. All three will be offered before the end of this semester.

All exams will be administered before the end of the year. The business office will collect these monies at a TBA date.


While no new textbooks will be required for this class, the student will utilize textbooks and other material from previous semesters to complete assignments.

  • The CRTT exam will be given in the computer room in HPB 117 between 700 AM & 1100 AM on Sept 21, 2006.
  • Both the written registry and the clinical-Sim tests will be given in HPB 117 starting at 700 AM to 1100 AM on November 28th.


Attendance:

Students are expected to attend all class, lab, and clinical sessions unless they are officially excused. An official absence is granted when such absence is caused by official participation in a college activity and the instructor is informed in advance.

All other absences are unofficial. Absences caused by unavoidable conditions, such as illness, should be reported to the clinical instructor at report time and to the division secretary at 8:00 a.m. on the scheduled clinical day.

In this course there will be only 2 absences allowed. Each absence will result in a one point [1%] reduction from the final average of the course. On the first absence, a written warning will be given to the student stating if a third absence occurs, the student will be withdrawn from the program. Upon the third absence, the student will be withdrawn from all respiratory care course work.

Leave of Absence is NOT given in this program. Withdrawal is required

Make-up Exams:

Because these are exit exams all final exams must be made-up. Because there are only comprehensive exams in this course, no missed test may be dropped.



Course Structure:

Clinical rotations in the outlying health care community constitute this class. The student will attend the assigned clinical rotations where he/ she will assume responsibility for patient care as assigned by the instructor. In addition to completing the required charting for the institution the student will keep a log book. The blank forms for the log book can be accessed via the internet by clicking on the description of the form in the log book section.



The log book:

There will be no SOAP charting in this course. The student will document his/her daily activities in the following manner. Unless otherwise advised, these will be turned in on Monday mornings. Mrs. Buzbee will keep the log book files on all students so that work given to another clinical instructor that belongs to the log book will eventually end up in her office. These will be dropped off at her mailbox every Monday. On the first day of class, each student will be given a sample sheet of each of these forms. It is the students’ responsibility to make copies of these forms and bring the appropriate one[s] to clinical every day. The log book will be assessed and graded by Ms. Buzbee quarterly this semester. If the student losses these sheets, please click on the links to get copies of these forms.

 

Daily log book entries

1.             Chest X-ray Rounds: The student will attend daily chest x-ray rounds and document this activity by performing a written chest x-ray interpretation. On Mondays, these will be given to Mrs. Buzbee. If she is not available, it is the student’s responsibility to put these in her mailbox on campus.  [10 copies]

2.            EKG interpretation: Each day the student will interpret a 6-second strip from lead II which will be handed to Mrs. Buzbee.  [10 copies]

3.            Three of these EKGs need to be 12-lead and those will be interpreted via Kingwood college protocol.  Put completed 12 lead EKG in Ms Buzbee’s box who will forward them to Mike Harshfield.

4.            Ventilator flow sheets the student will complete a ventilator sheet for each ventilator patient he/ she is assigned. All questions will be answered. These will be given to Kelley Buzbee.

a.            Volume ventilator flow sheet for pediatrics/neonates.  [4 copies for Herman’s Children’s]
b.            pressure ventilator  for neonates  [4 copies for Texas Children’s]
c.            Adult volume ventilator flow sheets for adult rotations. [ 12 copies for NEMC and for Conroe]


Special log book entries

5. Weaning sheet: Any adult patients who are weaned from the ventilator should be assessed with a weaning parameters sheet.  These may be turned into Kelley Buzbee.

Other Information:

Clinical rotations will be scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 AM - 730 PM.  Most clinical rotations will be scheduled on the day shift but there could be evening shift rotations included as scheduling needs demand. Please check the schedule for exact times of each rotation.



Grading:

The student will be assessed by the clinical instructor twice a semester via Data Arc.  Preclinical time will be given a participation grade based on work done during that time.  All clinical grades will be averaged and all categories of clinical assessment will collectively form 30% of the final grade.

The weaning sheets, flow sheets, EKGs and X-ray interpretations will be averaged and collectively form the log book category of the grade. There will be 3 quarterly and  a final log book grade. The logbook is worth 30% of the final grade.

The student will complete all of the AMP Clinical Simulation Test, which will be averaged to form 30% of the final grade. These AMP tests will be the "exit exam" for the respiratory care course.

The oral report and the procedural oral exam will both be averaged and collectively will form 10% of the final grade.

None of these tests can be dropped, as they are all comprehensive in nature.

                All exams will be weighted equally.



Schedule:
See attached sheet for the schedule of daily Clinical assignments.  This schedule will designate any campus days or holidays.  Holidays will include Thursday November 25.
